| TREE PLANTING SUCCESS - UTOPIA CONSERVATION AREA |
 |
Residents of Essa Township pitched in to assist the Friends of Utopia Gristmill and Park on May 5, 2013 at the Utopia Conservation Area with the planting of 32 fruit trees, 500 wildflowers, native shrubs and trees, and an additional 2 special apple trees which were planted in commemoration of the two families who once lived on the homestead land. The objective of this initiative is to keep the parkland open and accessible to the public, while retaining it as naturalized green-space in Essa Township.
Staff and Council for the Township of Essa would like to congratulate the Friends of Utopia Gristmill and Park on the success of their grant application to Tree Canada. The funding awarded to the Friends of Utopia Gristmill and Park went directly to the purchase and planting of fruit trees in the Utopia Conservation Area.
The municipality would like to send out a huge THANK YOU to all that were involved in this event. Your commitment to the betterment of our community and to our "fruitful" future is incredible.

Essa Historical Society held their first meeting May 1979 at the Egbert Community Centre. We celebrated our 25th birthday in June 2004 with twelve of the charter members in attendance.
Monthly meetings are held at the Thornton Library on the fourth Saturday of each month at 1:30 p.m. except for the months of June, July, August and December. Our program consists of speakers, discussions and trips.
The purpose of our Society is to continually update the history of Essa Township and to promote the preservation of historical buildings and landmarks, Essa Township's heritage and our Society whenever possible; and to work with other Historical Societies.
To date we have published two books with the assistance of the Township of Essa, "Century of Progress up to 1950" and "Essa: The Garden of Simcoe County 1950-2000". As well, booklets on the hamlets of Ivy, Egbert and Thornton are available.
