The Township of Essa Fire Department has two fire stations.  Station One located  in Thornton and Station Two in Angus.   The Fire Department consists of one full time Fire Chief and one  full time Administrative Assistant.  The Fire Department has a volunteer staff which consists of one Deputy Fire Chief, one Training Officer , one District Chief per station, four Captains per station and 23 firefighters per station.

Fire Permits
A permit is required for all burning in the Township with the exception of fires used for cooking or at campsites. No burn permits will be issued to residents of Angus, Baxter, Thornton or any built up area unless the fire is contained in a metal drum. This is to ensure that the fire is kept to a minimum size. Block/stone/brick enclosures or outdoor fireplaces are not an acceptable alternative. All burning must comply with the provisions of the Burning By-law No. 2005-88.

Fire Permits are available at the following locations:

• Administration Centre, upper level, during regular business hours
• Economic Development Centre  (located at the Angus Recreation Centre in the Arena) Monday - Friday:  12:30 - 4:30 p.m.

Burning without a Permit

A fine may occur or should the fire department be called to a set fire, you may be charged with the cost of the fire department which can range from $60.00 to $600.00.

Superior Tanker Shuttle Accreditation

The Township of Essa Fire Department has received Superior Tanker Shuttle Accreditation from the Fire Insurance Underwriters achieving a continuous flow of over 2385 liters per minute or 525 gallons per minute.  This accreditation provides the opportunity for residents in the rural area of Essa Township within 8 km of a fire station to request to have their insurance premiums reviewed by their broker.
