Proclamation – Fierté Simcoe Pride – July 30 – August 12, 2018

WHEREAS 2018 marks the Seventh Annual Fierté Simcoe Pride; and
WHEREAS the purpose of Fierté Simcoe Pride is to create a safe and inclusive County of Simcoe that supports gender and sexual diversity through services, activities and events; and
WHEREAS Gilbert Baker designed the Rainbow Pride flag in 1978, which is now a symbol of the Pride Movement and the advancement of human rights for sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics, with red signifying life, orange signifying healing, yellow signifying sunlight, green signifying nature, blue signifying serenity, peace and harmony, and finally purple signifying spirit; and
WHEREAS the Rainbow Flag is raised in the County of Simcoe to honour gender and sexual diversity; and
WHEREAS Fierté Simcoe Pride was established on May 13, 2012, with a mission to create and offer inclusive events, services, and programs that celebrate diversity of gender and sexual identities, promoting safe communities within the County of Simcoe; and
WHEREAS Fierté Simcoe Pride is filled with numerous events and activities that focus on education, awareness, community development, creative expression and fun for the whole family.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT Council of the Corporation of the Township of Essa hereby proclaims July 30, 2018 to August 12, 2018 as Fierté Simcoe Pride.
Proclamation – Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Day (September 9, 2018)

WHEREAS there is no safe amount, safe time, or safe kind of alcohol that a pregnant individual can drink during pregnancy; and
WHEREAS the term “Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder" (FASD) describes the range of disabilities that may affect in an individual who was exposed to alcohol in utero/or during pregnancy; and
WHEREAS prenatal alcohol exposure is the leading preventable cause of birth defects, such as physical and mental disability and behavioural and/or learning challenges; and
WHEREAS the exact number of people who have FASD is unknown, but it is estimated that 2 to 3 per cent of the population are born with effects of prenatal alcohol exposure annually; and
WHEREAS the estimated cost of FASD in Canada is $4 billion per year covering education, health, social services and justice costs; and
WHEREAS about half of all pregnancies are unplanned meaning developing fetuses are inadvertently exposed to alcohol; and
WHEREAS people around the world began observing International FASD Awareness Day on September 9 each year beginning in 1999, in order that on the ninth day of the ninth month of the year, the world will remember that during the nine months of pregnancy it is important to abstain from alcohol; and
WHEREAS the good health and well-being of the people of Essa are enhanced by the support of a national effort to educate about and prevent FASD through the Simcoe County FASD Prevention Committee, part of the Simcoe County FASD Initiative;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT Council of the Corporation of the Township of Essa hereby proclaims September 9, 2018 as “Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Day," to promote awareness of the effects of prenatal exposure to alcohol, to increase acceptance and support for those individuals so affected, to minimize further effects, and to ensure healthier communities in the future.
