Essa Township Advises Residents of Coyote Sightings

The Township is advising residents that there have been recent reports of coyote sightings within the community. Coyotes are a natural part of Ontario’s wildlife and are commonly more visible during certain times of the year as they search for food.

Residents are reminded to take the following precautions to reduce the risk of encounters and help keep the community safe:

  • Do not feed coyotes or leave food sources outdoors, including pet food, garbage, or fallen fruit
  • Keep pets on a leash and supervise them when outdoors
  • Avoid approaching coyotes and never attempt to feed or interact with them
  • If you encounter a coyote, make yourself appear larger, make noise, and slowly back away - do not run

The Township encourages residents to report aggressive or concerning wildlife behaviour to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. For emergencies or immediate safety concerns, residents should contact local authorities.

For more information on coexisting safely with wildlife, residents can visit the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry website.

Thank you for your cooperation in helping keep the community safe while respecting local wildlife.
