Living in Essa

Welcome to Essa Township

Located just southwest of Barrie and approximately 100 km north of Toronto, Essa Township offers the charm of rural living with easy access to urban amenities. Known as the place "Where Town and Country Meet," Essa is home to scenic rivers, rolling landscapes, and vibrant communities.

The Township includes Angus, Baxter, and Thornton, along with smaller hamlets such as Colwell, Egbert, Ivy, and Utopia. It also hosts CFB Borden, Canada's largest Canadian Forces training base.

Essa is a lower-tier municipality within Simcoe County, bordered by County Road 90 (north), County Road 27 (east), Highway 89 (south), and County Road 15 (west).

With roots dating back before Confederation, Essa was named after a Native American Chief’s daughter and held its first Council meeting on January 21, 1850.

Essa is a community proud of its history—and a great place to live, work, and explore.
